Why Penn State’s Joe Pa should coach
Sunday, June 15th, 2008Why Penn State’s Joe Pa should coach.
How much coaching does he do? I fully support and agree with the argument that he’s earned the right to leave on his own terms; that after all he’s done for Penn State, it’s the least they can do. But still, how much coaching does he do?
But does that matter? Not really. A head coach doesn’t really do much coaching. Their job is to make the decisions and to coach the coaches. And in the college role, they have more responsibilities in recruiting (but also summed up as decision making) and fund raising.
Much like the military, officers don’t do much fighting, they lead the troops to fight. I just finished watching the series Band of Brothers, and the main officer, Jack Winters, says at the end that he barely fired a shot in the entire war. Coaches are officers. The head coach leading in the rear like a colonel.
Who cares if he’s up in the press box (which he’s admitted recently he liked, after being forced there after his leg injury)? He can accomplish so much more from there. Being anything but the head coach, would be a travesty to Penn State. Unless he choses such.
